WILLEMSTAD - The public prosecutor has once again demanded seven years in prison for Eurodis J. (26), who is accused of involvement in the 2018 murder of Mike Venema. Eurodis was previously sentenced to seven years but appealed the verdict—not to contest the sentence itself, but because she disputes several of the acts she was held responsible for.
Admission: She Helped Dump the Body
Eurodis admits she suggested taking Venema’s body to the Shut, believing he was already dead and wanting to “find a solution” for the corpse. However, the court also holds her responsible for additional actions she claims she never participated in.
During Thursday’s hearing, the appeals court questioned Eurodis about intercepted phone calls in which she spoke as if she had been involved in the murder plan from the start. She told the court she was “trying to act tough” in those conversations and only later learned what the others had planned.
According to her testimony, she thought she had been invited to a “sex pool party” and expected to make money—not realizing until much later that the real plan was to kill the victim.
One of the strongest memories she described was the sound of Venema’s head hitting the stairs as the group carried his lifeless body down to the vehicle. She also admitted throwing away Venema’s phone while driving toward the Shut.
Defense Cites Age and Trauma
Defense attorney Athena Sulvaran argued for a reduced sentence, noting that Eurodis was only 18 years old at the time of the crime. She also cited a deeply troubled past marked by neglect, childhood trauma and sexual abuse beginning at age eight.
A psychiatric report submitted to the court states that Eurodis suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder at the time of the murder and is therefore partially diminished in accountability.
Despite this, the prosecutor insists that Eurodis is guilty of all charges and is maintaining the original demand of seven years’ imprisonment.
The Murder of Mike Venema
Mike Venema was brutally killed on September 12, 2018, in a vacation home in Jan Thiel. The suspects placed his body in his pickup truck and dumped it at the Shut. After his family reported him missing, authorities began an investigation, which was revived in 2023 after a new tip led to five arrests, including Eurodis J.
All five suspects admitted being present during the fatal incident. In the initial trial, they received sentences ranging from 30 months to 14 years.
The appeals court is expected to deliver its verdict in three weeks.
