Prominent role of Bonaire at United Nations water conference

Local | By Correspondent March 20, 2023

NEW YORK - Together with Curaçao, Bonaire will provide a special water session related to climate management at the United Nations water conference in New York. The aim of the conference is to arrive at an action agenda in which the member states contribute to the realization of clean water and sanitation. Both must be accessible to everyone by 2030.

"Small island states hardly contribute to climate change, but are the first to experience the negative consequences, and often to a large extent," Edison Rijna said in a press release.

“We also see this happening on Bonaire, which is why we set up a Climate Table and recently received advice on water management from experts from the water boards,” says the lieutenant governor.

He says that partly due to these initiatives, Bonaire has been invited to share experience, knowledge and vision with the participants of the conference.

The conference will take place from 22 to 24 March. It is the first United Nations meeting on water in nearly 50 years. Rijna is one of the speakers. King Willem-Alexander will attend part of the presentations.
