WILLEMSTAD - The findings of analyses conducted on Aqualectra blackouts are being given priority. This was reported by Minister of Economic Development (MEO) Ruisandro Cijntje (PNP). In mid-2023, several blackouts occurred in quick succession on Curaçao.
Cijntje responded to written questions from the MFK faction. The MEO minister indicated that a very detailed investigation had taken place, focusing on the technical aspect of the blackouts. Additionally, the organization's management level was scrutinized.
The utility company has already made upgrades to prevent future blackouts. For instance, the backup system has been upgraded to ensure that the supply of electricity is sufficient relative to demand. Action has also been taken regarding wind capacity, with further plans scheduled for 2026 and 2027.
The breakdown of the gas turbine at Mundo Nobo was caused by deploying a turbine as the sole operational unit instead of as a backup for a specific area. All electricity had to come from there, which overloaded the turbine. The reason other machines did not function properly, according to Cijntje, was due to delays in shipping parts.
The minister stated that a strategic plan is in place to prevent defects in the future. Additionally, a recent agreement has been signed allowing Aqualectra to focus on expanding wind parks. The electricity generated from these will be integrated into the utility's network, ultimately reaching households and businesses.
