NEW YORK - During his speech at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof made a brief, indirect reference to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, specifically in the context of climate change. While discussing global environmental challenges, Schoof noted, "From flooding to water scarcity: globally, we are experiencing the consequences, including in parts of our Kingdom. This is especially true for Small Island Developing States."
In addition to addressing climate change, Schoof touched on the situation in Venezuela, stating, "We are confronted with issues that require our continued attention: protecting human rights, democracy, and the international rule of law. There are many countries where these values are under pressure. For example, in Venezuela, where people are calling for their voices to be heard. To them, I say: we hear your voice. We hear your call for a democratic transition. And today, from this platform, I ask that we do not forget those voices."
Schoof's comments on Venezuela underscored the ongoing concerns about human rights and the need for democratic reforms in the country. His speech called on the international community to continue paying attention to these critical issues.
