Prime Minister receives the Secretary-General of the Association of Caribbean States

WILLEMSTAD - On June 6, 2024, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas welcomed the Secretary-General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), Rodolfo Sabonge. 

Sabonge, who also serves as the Chairman of the ACS Ministerial Council for 2023/2024 and is affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation of the Republic of Suriname, was accompanied by Ms. Safiya Reid, Officer-in-Charge of the ACS Directorate of Transport, Commerce, and Sustainable Development. 

Curaçao, as an associate member of the ACS, was visited by ACS representatives to familiarize themselves with Prime Minister Pisas and share plans and ideas on strengthening Curaçao's participation as an associate member through various projects and activities offered by the ACS. 

There is also the availability to create and receive funding for these initiatives. 

During the visit, discussions were held on various topics, including the new strategic plan of the ACS, upcoming projects, and the importance of regional cooperation. 

Regarding the new strategic plan of the ACS, Sabonge indicated that the focus for this year will be on connectivity and climate change. 

He also emphasized the importance of Curaçao making greater use of all the benefits and opportunities provided by the ACS and increasing participation in the various meetings and conferences organized by the ACS. 

As an associate member, Curaçao can also propose topics of common interest and has the right to intervene in discussions within the ACS Council of Ministers and special commissions on issues that directly concern Curaçao and fall under its constitutional competence. 

The ACS was established based on a CARICOM initiative in 1994, aiming to promote consultation, cooperation, and coordination of action among all Caribbean countries.
