Priest Carlos Donado Arrested Again for Alleged Violations of Release Conditions

Local | By Correspondent March 17, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Priest Carlos Donado has been arrested again after allegedly violating the conditions of his previous release. The clergyman, who was initially detained earlier this year, had been granted conditional release, but authorities have now taken him back into custody.

Both his lawyer Seyed Navid Zahedi, the Diocese, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM) have declined to comment in detail on the situation. The OM stated that due to the ongoing investigation and privacy concerns, no further information could be disclosed. Zahedi emphasized that Donado’s latest arrest was not the result of a complaint from the Diocese, though some sources suggest that another priest may have filed a report against him, possibly out of personal resentment.

Previous Arrest Linked to Money Laundering

Donado was first arrested on February 17 upon arriving at Hato International Airport from Colombia. Authorities later confirmed that the case was linked to money laundering activities.

Community Reactions and Ongoing Investigations

Donado is a well-known figure within Curaçao’s Catholic community, having served for several years at the church in Montaña. His arrest has caused significant controversy, with many parishioners believing in his innocence. The Diocese has encouraged the faithful to continue praying for him.

Initially, the media reported the arrest of a priest at the airport, withholding his name, which led to widespread speculation. The Diocese later confirmed the detention but did not disclose further details. Eventually, it was revealed that Donado was the suspect and was being investigated for money laundering.

Possible Links to Arms Trafficking Case

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Donado may also be connected to an ongoing illegal arms trade investigation in Curaçao. Last year, authorities seized hundreds of firearms, some of which were allegedly sold without permits and later used in criminal activities.

While the legal process unfolds, many devout followers continue to pray for Donado, following a call from the Diocese to support their spiritual leader in these challenging times.
