Price differences between shelf and checkout

Local | By Correspondent January 18, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The prices on the shelves of supermarkets sometimes differ from the price at the checkout. Curaçao Consumer Interests Foundation says it has received many reports about this.

As an example, the foundation gives a can of 'Meaty pate' at supermarket Centrum Mahaai, which is priced at 1.56 guilders at the shelf, while 1.99 guilders must be paid at the checkout. Consumer Interests Curaçao indicates that the retailer is legally obliged to sell the item for the price on the shelf or on the item, unless you as a consumer know that the price is really wrong. For example, if a TV is priced at 120 guilders, while it should have been 1200 guilders.

Many shops have signs at the checkout 'The price at the checkout applies', but the foundation indicates that this is not correct and calls on customers to remind shops of this legal obligation. If the retailer does not cooperate, Consumer Interests advises to report this to the Ministry of Economic Development.
