President of Parliament expresses concern over Curaçao's toxic political climate

Local | By Correspondent September 12, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Charetti America-Francisca, President of Parliament, has raised concerns regarding the increasingly toxic political climate in Curaçao. Her remarks were delivered during the closing session of the parliamentary year.

As a member of the MFK political party, America-Francisca emphasizes the need for a culture of respect and encourages the promotion of constructive dialogue. She has expressed apprehension that the current political atmosphere might escalate into verbal and physical violence against politicians. Additionally, she has noted a rise in mental health issues within the society, partially attributing this trend to the prevalence of negative news coverage.

The President of Parliament has called for open discussions that prioritize the respect of individuals and the presentation of viable solutions. Today also marks the ceremonial commencement of the new parliamentary year, featuring the submission of the draft budget for 2024 to parliament.
