WILLEMSTAD - The government of Curaçao is urging the community to prepare for possible bad weather on Tuesday, May 21, and Wednesday, May 22, as well as Friday, May 24. This is in consideration of the fact that we are also entering the 2024 hurricane season.
The Meteorological Service of Curaçao is monitoring the developing weather situation in our area during the upcoming days. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is forecasted. Various government services, including the Directorate of Risk Management (DRR), the Curaçao Police Corps (KPC), the Fire Department, the Public Works Service (OW), and SOAW, met on Monday morning, May 20, to prepare.
The community is being asked to consider that if you live in an area prone to flooding when it rains, you should prepare your home now to prevent flooding. Also, consider staying close to other family members. Additionally, note that emergency services are limited in the assistance they can provide during bad weather, as it can pose a danger to emergency personnel.
The government is also starting preparations by cleaning gutters and dams and activating all emergency response groups (ESF).
As a precautionary measure, you are asked to:
During bad weather, unplug electronic devices and avoid using them during a thunderstorm;
Use landline phones only in case of emergency;
Secure any loose objects outside and ensure the safety of yourself and your pets indoors;
Avoid taking shelter in isolated structures;
Do not drive through flooded streets or areas where large gullies are running;
Get out of boats and move away from the water if possible.
