WILLEMSTAD – Several neighborhoods in Curaçao experienced temporary power outages on Saturday due to a sudden drop in wind capacity. The utility company Aqualectra reported that wind power quickly decreased from 50 to 25 megawatts (MW), leading to brief electricity interruptions for residents.
However, Aqualectra emphasized that there was no shortage of capacity. “We have sufficient capacity, which allowed us to activate reserve power within 40 minutes and restore electricity to all households,” the company said, referring to the fossil fuel-powered plants.
To prevent such disruptions in the future, Aqualectra is planning to implement large battery storage systems in the first half of 2025. These batteries will help absorb the sudden loss of wind energy more quickly and effectively, according to Aqualectra's director.
