Potential savings for Caribbean Coast Guard proposed in Dutch budget

Local | By Correspondent September 19, 2024

THE HAGUE - The Dutch government may implement savings measures for the Caribbean Coast Guard, according to the "Adjustment List 2024" presented by Minister of Finance Eelco Heinen (VVD) on Budget Day. The proposal outlines plans to reduce the Dutch contribution to the Coast Guard by 10 million euros annually from 2026 to 2029.

Currently, the Netherlands finances 69 percent of the Coast Guard's operating costs. However, due to additional agreements, including exemptions for air defense and crime fighting, the actual contribution rises to 88 percent. Heinen stated that by aligning all costs with the 69 percent distribution key, it would be possible to achieve these savings.

The proposed measure requires modifications to previous agreements, which means it cannot be enacted until 2026. Heinen emphasized that the adjustment list serves as an annual overview of proposals aimed at improving government finances and does not reflect any judgment on the desirability of the measures.

As discussions about the budget continue, the proposed savings could impact the operations of the Caribbean Coast Guard, raising questions about future funding and resource allocation in the region.
