Possible postponement of changes in SVB basic insurance package

Local | By Correspondent August 29, 2023

Ministry considers delay due to potential negative impact on vulnerable groups

WILLEMSTAD - The plan to eliminate specific supplements and vitamins from the basic insurance coverage provided by the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) is facing potential postponement. This decision comes as concerns mount over the potentially detrimental effects on vulnerable population segments. The Ministry of Finance made this announcement through an official press release.

Initially set to take effect on September 1st, the plan required policyholders to independently cover the expenses associated with certain supplements and vitamins. The anticipated changes have already prompted some suppliers to request supplementary payments from their clients, given that the existing basic insurance package does not encompass these costs.

Recognizing the potential repercussions for elderly and vulnerable individuals, Javier Silvania, the Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature from the MFK party, has taken the initiative to propose a postponement of the planned alterations. His primary objective is to conduct a thorough investigation into the feasibility of removing supplements and vitamins from the basic insurance package.

The government's stance on this matter underscores their acknowledgment of the financial challenges faced by the less privileged. The added burden of having to pay extra for commonplace vitamins and supplements is a factor that the government aims to address.

As the discussions continue, the outcome remains uncertain, and further deliberations are expected to take place between stakeholders, including the SVB, relevant ministries, and advocacy groups. The potential postponement represents an attempt to strike a balance between fiscal responsibility and the well-being of those who might be adversely affected by the proposed changes.
