WILLEMSTAD - The tropical wave currently sweeping through the Caribbean has a 90 percent chance of developing into a hurricane within 48 hours. The possible fifteenth hurricane of the season does not pose a direct threat to the ABC islands, according to the weather services.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) expects the system to expand into a tropical storm on Monday. A Tropical Storm Watch is in place in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Also in Mexico, the weather services warn of the arrival of the storm that is likely to develop into a hurricane.
Although the disturbance is not an immediate threat to Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire, the possible hurricane will cause heavy rainfall on the islands. About 20 millimeters of rain was measured in some areas on Monday morning.
The system is moving west and is expected to make landfall in the U.S. on Wednesday. NHC predicts wind gusts of about 185 kilometers per hour in the center of the hurricane.
