WILLEMSTAD - Starting August 18th, the 7th edition of the multi-day Kaya Kaya festival will begin. A new initiative, Skol Urbano, kicks off on August 18th and runs until August 24th. Skol Urbano offers unique workshops to celebrate and promote culture, community building, and creativity. There will be a wide range of art forms, including dance, writing, music, and sculpting workshops, as well as night economy and crypto and NFT panels, poetry jams, dance-off battles, DJ showcases, placemaking, and live music. Skol Urbano will be hosted at the St. Martinus Mavo building on Belverderestraat.
Additionally, Kaya Kaya is organizing its 2nd Art Week from August 19th to August 24th. This year, 30 artists will participate, displaying their works in art houses within the festival area. During Art Week, a unique storytelling project, "OTC Ser'i Otrobanda Levendige Verhalen," inspired by the striking photographs of Sinaya Wolfert, will be launched. Five talented actors will perform monologues and short performances, bringing the stories behind the photos to life. Kaya Kaya will also feature its own Art House, showcasing the festival's developments. Under the guidance of Otrobanda residents, an Art Walkastry will be held throughout Art Week. This walking tour offers a rare opportunity to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of Otrobanda, one of Curaçao’s most iconic neighborhoods.
The festival setup will begin on Saturday, August 17th, and Sunday, August 18th. This may cause some disruptions, such as unloading equipment, slower traffic, or temporary obstructions on sidewalks. We ask for your understanding and apologize in advance for any inconvenience. We hope to welcome you to the workshops at Skol Urbano, the beautiful art in the Art Houses during Art Week, the Art Walkastry, and of course, the festival on August 24th, followed by the “Saka Ratón” on August 25th.
