WILLEMSTAD - Along the coast of Curaçao, Portuguese man o’ war has been spotted again. Mark Vermeij of Carmabi confirms this. The suspicion is that there are many because the institute has received several reports. According to Vermeij, however, this is normal for the time of the year. Around January / February there are usually reports of these sea creatures around the island.
Portuguese man o’ war are colonies of polyps with small harpoons. Being stung by one of them can be painful. To remove the tentacles with a stick, Carmabi recommends treating the spot with vinegar, rinsing for at least 45 minutes with warm water (40 degrees) and taking a lot of vitamin C.
