WILLEMSTAD - On Thursday, May 17, 2023, a police officer from the Curaçao Police Force (KPC) stood trial. The officer discharged his firearm on April 14, 2022, while attempting to apprehend a suspect involved in a burglary at a business. The suspect sustained a leg injury and required surgical intervention. The Curaçao National Detective Agency conducted an investigation into the incident, following the directives of the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM).
Based on the investigation, the OM concludes that the officer's use of their firearm was not in accordance with the prescribed rules and regulations. As a result, the officer has been charged with severe misconduct, and the OM has requested a fully conditional work sentence of 24 hours, along with a probationary period of 1 year. The sentencing will take place on June 6th.
