Police officer accused of fraud and utility theft faces trial

Local | By Correspondent November 21, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Police officer A.M. (49) appeared in court yesterday to face charges of stealing electricity and water, submitting 128 fraudulent invoices, threatening employees of the utility company Aqualectra, and falsifying customs documents.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, A.M. allegedly stole electricity and water from Aqualectra between January 2021 and December 2022. The officer is also accused of threatening four Aqualectra employees, reportedly saying: “These matters are driving me crazy. I am not responsible for what happens if I find you at my house again. Next time, I’ll set off a bomb.”

Additionally, A.M. is accused of filing false customs declarations for goods ordered from abroad. Prosecutors claim she deliberately undervalued the items to pay less in taxes, submitting 104 falsified invoices along with 24 other fraudulent documents.

The trial began yesterday but was adjourned due to time constraints. A.M. invoked her right to remain silent regarding the forged invoices, leaving insufficient time to address all the charges during the one-hour session. When questioned by the judge, A.M. confirmed she intended to continue exercising her right to silence.

Given the backlog of cases in recent months, the court postponed the trial indefinitely. It is now expected to resume in April 2025.
