WILLEMSTAD - Throughout the carnival period, strict measures will once again be taken against disturbing public order. A zero-tolerance policy will be enforced during all carnival parades, as announced by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
This year's motto is: Aktua robes, sintié un bes – breaking the law leads to immediate consequences. For those who receive a summons, court dates are scheduled for May 20, 2024, and possibly June 3, 2024. Appearing in court puts individuals at risk of imprisonment, higher fines, and a criminal record.
Without Suspicion
Everyone aged 12 and above present near the carnival route is required to carry a valid identification, in accordance with legal identification requirements. The police will conduct thorough checks.
Additionally, based on the Firearms Ordinance, the Public Prosecutor's Office has authorized the police to conduct preventive searches. This means that individuals can be searched for firearms before, during, and after the carnival parades without prior suspicion.
Traffic
Special attention will be given to traffic, especially to drivers and passengers of motorcycles, scooters, quads, and cars. Wearing a properly fitting helmet is mandatory for two-wheeled vehicles.
Risky driving behaviors such as 'fevering,' 'hopping,' and 'drifting' will not be tolerated. In such cases, the vehicle will be confiscated, and the driver will be arrested. Drivers must also have a valid inspection card, tax card, insurance certificate, and driver's license. Non-compliance with these rules results in arrest and vehicle confiscation.
Offenders can be offered a settlement at the police station. A fifteen percent discount is given for immediate payment. After meeting all requirements, confiscated vehicles can be retrieved starting from March 4.
