Police conduct large-scale traffic checks across Willemstad

WILLEMSTAD - The police conducted extensive traffic checks at various locations in Willemstad yesterday. The operations primarily focused on enforcing traffic light regulations. 

At a checkpoint on the intersection of Schottegatweg-Noord and Snipweg, 26 vehicles were inspected. The police issued 19 traffic tickets for running red lights and fined one motorcyclist for not wearing a helmet. Another checkpoint at the intersection of Winston Churchillweg and F.D. Rooseveltweg resulted in fines for five drivers for running red lights. 

During inspections on F.D. Rooseveltweg, two Jamaican nationals were found to be residing illegally on the island. They were handed over to the Immigration Department, and their vehicle was confiscated. 

Later in the day, the Rio Canario police conducted additional traffic checks on Schottegatweg-Noord and Suffisantweg. A total of 135 vehicles were inspected, leading to 51 traffic tickets for violations such as not wearing a seatbelt, lacking valid insurance, inspection certificates, driver’s licenses, unpaid road taxes, and missing front license plates. Vehicles with excessively tinted windows were also fined. 

On the same day, the Hato police and customs officers carried out a multidisciplinary check on F.D. Rooseveltweg near the Hato Caves. They inspected 24 vehicles and issued 14 traffic tickets for missing insurance, inspection certificates, and driver’s licenses, as well as for vehicles with tinted windows. Three vehicles were towed away due to serious infractions. 

The police have announced that these traffic checks will continue to enhance road safety on the island.
