Police can scan digital insurance documents

Local | By Correspondent January 29, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The police in Curaçao have been given the ability to scan digital insurance documents. This follows the introduction of digital insurance policies by some insurance companies, allowing drivers to prove that their vehicle is insured.

In this new development, digital policies contain a 'QR code', which can be stored on both a smartphone and a physical document in the vehicle.

When the police ask a driver for proof of insurance, as required by law, the driver must be able to show this either via their phone or the insurance document.

It is essential that the insurance is valid. If not, the driver risks a fine, and the police may decide not to allow the driver to continue driving.

For drivers whose insurance company has not issued a digital policy yet, it remains necessary to have the traditional paper policy ('hard copy') with them.
