PNP: Bodycams for police officers to ensure more transparency

Local | By Correspondent February 13, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Partido Nashonal di Pueblo (PNP) advocates for the use of bodycams by police officers to increase transparency, particularly during police operations at events such as carnivals.

PNP Member of Parliament, Sheldry Osepa, raises this suggestion in a letter with questions to the Minister of Justice, Shalten Hato (MFK). According to the afternoon newspaper, there is an increase in aggression between citizens and police, and bodycams would provide a safer feeling for officers. Additionally, citizens could benefit as the recording equipment may lead to fewer incidents of violence.

Osepa's questions primarily inquire if the government is aware of the advantages of bodycams and if they are considering their implementation.

Whether the government will heed the PNP's idea remains to be seen.
