WILLEMSTAD - Residents in the Zakitó and Charo areas presented a petition against the construction activities in the area to the President of Parliament, Charetti America-Francisca, on Tuesday morning. The group 'Save Zakitó' announced this.
The petition has been signed nearly 2,000 times. Through the signature campaign, the group aims to halt the construction work in Zakitó. Save Zakitó claims that mangroves and coral reefs are being continuously destroyed in the area. The petition seeks to prevent further damage.
Residents of Zakitó and Charo raised the alarm at the end of April. The area has been a subject of controversy. A permit for the project was issued in May 2023. The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) also gave approval based on local reef management legislation for the aforementioned constructions. Therefore, the developer must adhere to all regulations and avoid harming nature, but according to the residents, this is not happening.
