People visiting beaches on the southern part of the island should be aware of the presence of Portuguese Man o' War

Local | By Correspondent July 13, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature informs that Portuguese Man o' War have been spotted on the southern coast of Curaçao. Recently, there have been cases of people coming into contact with Portuguese Man o' War in the Pier area of Maripampoen beach. Their presence along our coast depends on temporary changes in wind patterns, with most sightings reported on the southern part of the island. Visitors to these beaches are advised to exercise caution and be mindful of their safety.

Portuguese Man o' War are relatively easy to spot in the water. They resemble a floating plastic bag or purple balloon filled with air, measuring approximately 25 centimeters in diameter, drifting in the ocean. If you see one, stay away and do not attempt to remove it from the water. Their tentacles can reach up to 15 meters in length. If you come into contact with the tentacles, carefully remove any remaining tentacles from your skin, rinse the affected area with seawater, and apply vinegar or a regular baking soda solution (1-2 tablespoons in 2 liters of water) to the affected area. If the affected area continues to burn or causes intense pain, seek medical attention immediately.

It is important to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety while enjoying the beaches of Curaçao.
