Passenger rescued after falling overboard from cruise ship

Local | By Correspondent June 30, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - A female American passenger aboard the Mariner of the Seas cruise ship went overboard earlier this week while the vessel was en route to Curaçao. The incident occurred on the tenth deck when the 42-year-old tourist, who had been sitting on the railing to capture some photographs, lost her footing and slipped into the open sea. Despite the odds stacked against her, she managed to survive the terrifying ordeal.

Upon reaching the shores of Curaçao, the woman was promptly taken to a local hospital for a thorough examination. The medical evaluation aimed to ensure that she had not sustained any serious injuries during her fall. Such accidents often have tragic outcomes, making her survival all the more remarkable.

According to a report released by the international association of cruise companies, incidents of individuals going overboard were not uncommon between 2009 and 2019, with a total of 212 reported cases. Alarmingly, only 28.2 percent of those who fell into the water were successfully rescued. The statistics underscore the gravity of such incidents and the challenges involved in saving lives in open waters.
