Partial sale of Oostpunt: unlocking potential for development

Local | By Correspondent May 24, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Willy Maal, the owner of Oostpunt's private property (east point), has confirmed to a local Dutch newspaper that a portion of Oostpunt has been sold. The sold area encompasses sections designated by the government as part of the Island Development Plan, presenting promising opportunities for development.

The sale opens up possibilities for utilizing the land for tourism or housing purposes. The specific site that has been sold constitutes a significant quarter of the entire eastern side of the island. Primarily situated along the southern coast, it includes the inner bays and a portion of the interior.

At present, the site remains accessible only to authorized individuals. Maal emphasizes the importance of this restriction to safeguard against illegal dumping, criminal activities, and drug trafficking. "Future development will create a less attractive and potentially more challenging environment for criminal elements," Maal asserts.

Despite the sale to investors, the area will continue to be held as private property, maintaining its longstanding status within the Van Maal family since 1868.

Maal has chosen not to disclose the identity of the buyers or the financial details of the transaction.
