WILLEMSTAD - Member of Parliament Juniel Carolina (MFK) has voiced serious concerns about a persistent fly infestation affecting several neighborhoods, including Jandoret, Klein Sint Michiel, Boca Samí, Sami Liber, Malpais, Bullenbaai, and surrounding areas.
Carolina attributes the fly nuisance to waste management activities at the Malpais Landfill, which is operated by the government-owned company Selikor. Despite his attempts to reach Selikor for clarification, Carolina reported receiving no response.
Appeal to the Minister
Carolina has directed his concerns and questions to Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature Javier Silvania (MFK). He described the fly problem as a public health hazard that poses risks to the community and the local economy. "It is the government's responsibility to address this issue and hold Selikor accountable for its operations," Carolina emphasized.
Key Questions Raised
The MP has called on the minister to clarify:
Whether he is aware of the complaints about the fly infestation.
If a direct link between the issue and the landfill operations has been identified.
What plans, if any, are in place to mitigate the problem.
Carolina also requested an update on Selikor’s long-term strategy to transition entirely to recycling and convert landfill waste into energy by 2025.
Health and Environmental Impact
Carolina highlighted the urgency of resolving the matter, citing the negative impact on residents' quality of life and the potential health risks posed by the flies. He urged the government to act swiftly to protect public health and ensure accountability in waste management operations.
The situation underscores the growing challenges of balancing effective waste management with environmental and community well-being in Curaçao.
