Parliament Rejects Proposal to Expand Dutch Voting Rights for Caribbean Residents

Local, | By Correspondent February 18, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Parliament has rejected the proposal to give Dutch citizens living in the Caribbean countries voting rights for the Dutch House of Representatives, arguing that this does not address the democratic deficit within the Kingdom .

According to the Parliament, extending voting rights would create confusion within Curaçao’s local electorate while offering little real influence over Kingdom decision-making. More than 95 percent of matters debated in the Dutch parliament concern domestic Dutch issues, limiting the relevance of such representation for Caribbean residents.

The Parliament stresses that democratic legitimacy within the Kingdom should be addressed through institutional balance, not symbolic participation. Real equality, it argues, requires stronger representation of Caribbean countries within Kingdom decision-making structures, not incorporation into another country’s parliament.

Instead, the Parliament reiterates the importance of strengthening Curaçao’s own constitutional voice within the Kingdom, including a more substantive and authoritative role for the Minister Plenipotentiary.
