Parliament Member Martines also arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking

Local | By Correspondent November 6, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Michelangelo "Lo" Martines, a parliament member and founder of the Kòrsou Esun Mihó (KEM) party, was arrested Tuesday morning not only on suspicion of money laundering but also on suspicion of drug trafficking. His arrest is part of the "BLEDA" criminal investigation, targeting serious crimes with a significant impact on community safety.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Martines’ arrest. He had previously served a prison sentence for a drug-related offense. This detention follows over a year of intensive investigation by the Special Investigation Team (RST). Under the supervision of a deputy public prosecutor, RST also conducted a home search, seizing several items that may serve as incriminating evidence.

Martines, known as the sole representative of KEM, recently played a role in strengthening the Pisas government. His party, KEM, was expected to provide the new Minister of Social Development, Labor, and Welfare, though this appointment had not yet been officially confirmed.

To avoid compromising the ongoing investigation, the Public Prosecutor’s Office is not releasing additional details at this time but has indicated that more arrests could follow.
