Parliament Holds Technical Briefing on Draft Legislation to Strengthen Anti-Terrorism Laws

WILLEMSTAD – The Central Committee of Parliament will hold a technical briefing on Wednesday to discuss the Draft National Ordinance amending the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure to introduce stricter measures against terrorism. The Curaçao Bar Association will participate in the initial session, the government announced.

The meeting will take place in the parliament chamber at Wilhelminaplein, where the draft law will be reviewed alongside other necessary legal reforms. The Bar Association will lead the first round of discussions, followed later by contributions from Human Rights Defense Curaçao and Human Rights Caribbean.

The purpose of the technical briefing is to provide legal professionals and advocacy organizations with the opportunity to analyze the proposed amendments, offer feedback, and respond to questions. This stage is considered an essential part of the legislative process before the proposal is formally submitted to Parliament.

Following the briefing, there will be a period of further consultation and review, after which the proposal will move to the next phase of parliamentary debate. Given the significant impact of the proposed changes on criminal law and procedure, lawmakers are aiming for broad legal and societal consensus before proceeding with implementation.
