Parliament calls for investigation into alternative location for Sentro Bario Otrobanda

Local | By Correspondent February 2, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Parliament unanimously supports a motion to give Sentro Bario Otrobanda (SBO) the opportunity to move to an alternative building responsibly. The motion was passed to instruct the government, in collaboration with Fundashon Kas Popular (FKP), to conduct research into the possibility of granting SBO an exemption for one year.

Additionally, the Parliament urges the government to promptly investigate whether another location is available for the community center. Various parliament members emphasize the necessity of preserving the community center in Otrobanda for the neighborhood's development.

The management of the community center is concerned since they must vacate the current building on April 1. Parliament member Ana Maria Pauletta (PAR) calls on the parliament to take action based on the motion and urges the government to respond promptly.

In mid-November it was reported that opposition party PAR requested rent forgiveness for SBO in a motion. SBO owes 23 years of overdue rent to Fundashon Kas Popular. It seems that the community center may still have to pay a portion – the last five years – of the overdue rent and vacate the building.
