WILLEMSTAD – Political party PAR is urging for a national consultation on the planned increase of the General Old Age Insurance (AOV). The party argues that broad public involvement is essential to build support for measures aimed at strengthening Curaçao’s pension system.
Expanding the Contribution Base
PAR recalls that during the election campaign it pledged to broaden the income base of the AOV. One of its proposals is to grant temporary work permits to undocumented migrants, allowing them to contribute to the pension fund through social premiums and taxes.
The party also advocates for a shift from direct to indirect taxation, ensuring that everyone on the island contributes to financing social services. A tourist tax is also being considered as an additional source of revenue.
Deadline for Implementation Acc
ording to PAR, an increase in AOV benefits must take effect by January 2026, with a phased rollout over no more than two years. The party stresses that these measures are already included in the 2025–2029 governing program and must not be delayed.
“More than **30,000 pensioners are waiting for improvement. This cannot become a matter of postponement politics,” the party stated.
