WILLEMSTAD – The Public Works Service (OW) is aware of the increased complaints regarding blockages in the sewer system and is actively working on a structural solution to address these issues more efficiently. However, due to a lack of available contractors and sufficient equipment, the resolution of these blockages has been delayed. OW is making strong efforts to hire more contractors to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
Curaçao’s Sewer System
Curaçao’s sewer system transports wastewater from homes through a pumping system to purification plants located at Kleinhofje and Klein Kwartier. Most government-owned neighborhoods are connected to this system, while many private homes use septic tanks. OW is responsible for handling complaints related to blockages in the public sewer system.
Causes of the Delay
In some cases, sewer blockages can be resolved within a day, but currently, the process is taking longer due to a shortage of contractors. At the moment, only one contractor with a specialized truck is available to clear blocked sewer pipes, causing delays in the complaint resolution process. OW is working on hiring additional contractors to improve services and reduce waiting times.
Additionally, some neighborhoods, such as Emmastad, Julianadorp, and Schelpwijk, have very old sewer systems, which require extra work and investment to achieve a long-term, sustainable solution.
Call to the Community
OW is urging the public to be more mindful of the sewer system. Specifically, residents are asked not to dispose of wipes in the toilet. Unlike toilet paper, wipes do not dissolve in water, leading to blockages and complicating maintenance efforts.
OW remains committed to finding an efficient and effective solution to the current situation and is asking for the understanding and cooperation of the community during this period.
