WILLEMSTAD – The Ambulance Wish Foundation Curaçao (Fundashon Ambulans Deseo Korsou - FADK) has now fulfilled more than fifty final wishes for terminally ill and bedridden patients on the island. Known as the “Wensambulance”, the foundation offers this deeply human service free of charge, using a specially equipped ambulance staffed with trained medical personnel.
The foundation is now calling on the public to help raise awareness of its work, as not all wishes are able to be fulfilled—often due to late referrals or the rapidly declining health of patients.
Many of the wishes are simple yet profoundly meaningful: a last visit to the family home, the smell of the sea, or time with loved ones. According to co-founder and ambassador Norman Jansen, these experiences leave lasting, comforting memories not only for the patients but also for their families.
“Sometimes, we receive the request too late,” said Jansen. “That affects not only the loved ones but also our volunteers, who give their all to make these final moments special.”
Call for Support and Awareness
FADK is urging the community to spread the word—whether through sharing information, offering free advertising space, raising media attention, or supporting fundraising efforts. The foundation is officially recognized as an ANBI (Public Benefit Organization), making donations from the Netherlands tax-deductible.
The powerful initiative has inspired the creation of similar foundations in Aruba and Bonaire, extending the spirit of compassion across the region.
“It’s heartwarming to see this kind of humanity spreading throughout the Caribbean,” said Jansen. “Together, we make it possible for people in their final stage of life to smile one last time.”
FADK encourages families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to reach out as early as possible if a patient has a final wish—so that no opportunity for comfort and closure is missed.
