WILLEMSTAD – The year 2025 has begun with a troubling spike in gun-related violence on Curaçao. In the first few months alone, authorities have recorded over 40 incidents involving firearms, including shootings, armed robberies, and even fatal encounters.
Officials are sounding the alarm as a growing number of the individuals involved are relatively young, heightening concerns about youth involvement in serious crime.
Back in 2014, Curaçao launched a large-scale disarmament campaign known as "Ta Basta Awor", which successfully removed dozens of illegal firearms from circulation. However, since that initiative, no similar efforts have been repeated, despite a clear resurgence in gun-related violence.
Justice Ministry Responds
Minister of Justice Shalten Hato (MFK) told Extra that his ministry is currently working on a strategic plan to tackle the issue. The strategy involves collaboration with the Coast Guard, Customs, and the Curaçao Police Force (KPC), with the primary aim of limiting the influx of illegal firearms into the country.
No specific measures have been disclosed yet, but the minister emphasized that the authorities are taking the situation seriously.
Urgent Need for Action
The rise in firearms incidents underscores an urgent need for swift and effective action to restore and protect public safety on the island. Many residents and security experts are calling for a renewed focus on disarmament, youth outreach, and border control, as the community grapples with the growing threat of gun violence.
