Over 200 kilograms of vegetables confiscated by MEO

Local | By Correspondent July 14, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Economic Development's inspection department made a significant seizure yesterday, confiscating over 200 kilograms of vegetables. The haul included 135 kilograms of green bell peppers and 85 kilograms of cassava. These vegetables were imported by the company Botrys in violation of the current import ban.

Despite the restrictions, Botrys went ahead with the importation, prompting the intervention of MEO's inspection team. The confiscated vegetables, which were deemed unfit for distribution due to the import violation, were not wasted. Instead, they were distributed among local care institutions, ensuring that they could be put to good use and avoiding unnecessary food waste.

It is important to note that the import ban on certain vegetables is subject to regular changes, typically on a monthly basis. These changes are based on the availability of locally grown produce. The purpose of this measure is to protect and support local farmers by promoting the consumption of locally sourced vegetables.
