Over 12,000 signatures support ending stray animal killings in Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - Yesterday, a petition entitled "Stop the killing of dogs and cats in Curaçao" was presented to Prime Minister Pisas, garnering significant attention. The petition has also reached the permanent Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Nature, and Food Quality in The Hague, capturing the interest of lawmakers. With an impressive response from concerned citizens, over 12,000 individuals have added their signatures to support the urgent need to end the killing of stray animals.

The petition, initiated by six prominent animal welfare organizations in Curaçao and led by the Dutch organization House of Animals, highlights the unethical nature of this practice, emphasizing that it is also prohibited by law. The substantial support received demonstrates the growing public awareness and concern for the welfare of stray animals on the island.

In The Hague, members of parliament paid close attention to the petition's delivery, acknowledging its significance. They expressed their commitment to discussing the controversial plan proposed by the Animal Protection organization during a session in the Dutch House of Representatives. This signifies a vital step forward in addressing the issue at a national level.

Meanwhile, the organizations in Curaçao have received an invitation to participate in a crucial meeting with representatives from the veterinary services, the Ministry of Public Health (GMN), and the local animal protection agency. This gathering presents an opportunity for collaborative discussions to devise effective strategies for protecting and managing the stray animal population on the island.
