ORANJESTAD - The chance of risks when opening the border with Venezuela is lurking. That is why Aruba thinks it is important to hold talks with neighboring countries and to prepare the opening accurately.
This was explained by the Aruban Minister of Justice Rocco Tjon during a press conference after the Judicial Four Countries Consultations (JVO). In the consultations, increasing security in the Kingdom was high on the agenda. According to the other justice ministers of the islands and the Netherlands, the strengthening of the law enforcement chain has made progress.
Tjon says that the opening of the border must be well-prepared and must be done in a responsible manner. “If everything is well prepared, there will be a technical meeting with Venezuela at the end of this month,” said Tjon.
A point of attention for the reopening is cross-border crime. According to Curaçao Minister of Justice Shalton Hato, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed in the coming days. This should ensure more structural police cooperation in the Caribbean Netherlands. The MoU must be used to devise strategies for, among other things, human trafficking, arms and drug smuggling and tackling juvenile crime.
