WILLEMSTAD - The Aruban open water swimmer Deaxo Croes swam from Bonaire to Curaçao on Saturday. The aim of the swimming trip was to create more awareness and to raise money for cancer research on the ABC islands.
The open water swimmer came into action during the "Crossing for Prevention" event for three foundations on the ABC islands that are committed to cancer. The crossing was a trip of approximately 53 kilometers and started around 2 a.m. midnight.
Croes swam from the southernmost tip of Bonaire, at the dive site Red Slave Huts, to the easternmost point of Curaçao. A team of 25 volunteers guided Deaxo. The team consisted of doctors, a dietician, an open-water coach, kayakers, assistant swimmers, divers, a film crew, and three motorboats.
In recent months, the open water swimmer has trained by swimming many long distances between 50 and 72 kilometers per week.
It is not Deaxo’s first time. In 2018 he swam with four team members from Venezuela to Aruba and thus collected a total of 123,000 Aruban guilders.
