WILLEMSTAD - The destruction of mangrove trees in the Koredor area continues, according to Maritza Lauffer from the activist group Save Zakitó. On Wednesday, several piles of earth were spotted at locations where mangroves had previously stood.
Lauffer claims that heavy machinery has been brought in to remove parts of the mangrove forest. The trees are being cleared to make way for a new access road to the planned apartment complex near Piscadera.
The construction of a new marina and roads could cause further damage to the natural environment, warns the activist group. "Mangroves play a crucial role in natural water drainage and flood protection. With increasing rainfall during the rainy season, exacerbated by climate change, this function is more important than ever," Lauffer stated.
The destruction of mangroves in the area has raised growing concerns among local residents and environmental organizations. Save Zakitó is calling for a halt to construction in order to prevent further disruption to the ecosystem and is urging authorities to prioritize environmental protection and sustainable urban development.
