Once again, mangroves destroyed in Zakitó construction

Local | By Correspondent April 29, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Residents of Piscadera have raised alarm once again after witnessing the destruction of mangrove trees over the past weekend during construction work for a resort in Zakitó. They have captured footage of the incident. It is known that the residents have started an online petition to halt this project.

In addition to the mangrove deforestation, residents report that the construction of a marina and a breakwater is also damaging the underwater corals. In a press release, the government informed that since May 2023, it has granted various permits to the company Royal Holding Company II B.V. as part of the development of a marina in the Zakitó area.

The Pro Monumento Foundation and Amigu di Tera had filed an administrative case against various aspects of the project that they deemed incorrect. The court rejected all objections raised against the project.
