October 1 marks the International Day of Older Persons: A call to strengthen care and end ageism

Local | By Press release September 30, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - In recognition of the United Nations' International Day of Older Persons, Fundashon Nos Grandinan (FNG), a foundation with over 21 years of service to the elderly community of Curaçao, is raising awareness of this year's theme: "Ageing with Dignity: Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons." This theme deeply resonates with FNG's long-standing mission to improve the quality of life for Curaçao's seniors, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.

A Call for Dignity and Stronger Support Systems

FNG emphasizes the urgent need for environments where older persons can live with dignity, supported by their families and robust care systems. Globally, millions of seniors face inadequate care, and in Curaçao, the aging population requires more compassionate and extensive support to meet their unique needs.

"Ageing with dignity is a right, not a privilege," says FNG chairperson, Geselle Rosaria-Coffi. "Our foundation works tirelessly to ensure that our elders are valued, protected, and provided with the essential services they deserve."

Addressing Ageism: A Societal Responsibility

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines ageism as the stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination directed at people based on their age. Geselle Coffi explains, "Ageism is so ingrained in our culture that we often don't even notice it. Yet, it violates human rights and stands in direct conflict with the principle of equality."

Ageism remains a significant barrier to achieving dignified aging. It affects older persons' access to healthcare, employment, social inclusion, and financial services. For instance, many banks have made it difficult for seniors to secure loans. FNG encourages the community to reflect on how ageism manifests in various areas of life, from negative media stereotypes to workplace discrimination.

"As a society, we must break free from stereotypes that diminish the value of older persons," Coffi states. "Our seniors are the pillars of our community, and it is our shared responsibility to honor their contributions and combat ageism in all its forms."

What Society Can Do to Combat Ageism

To effectively fight ageism, society must take actionable steps. This includes promoting empathy and recognizing the invaluable experiences and wisdom that older persons bring. It also requires strengthening care systems through collaboration between the government, businesses, and civil organizations to prioritize seniors' health and well-being. Advocacy for inclusion, a core part of FNG's mission for over two decades, is equally vital to ensuring older persons remain socially, economically, and politically involved.

Join FNG in Honoring Curaçao's Seniors

Fundashon Nos Grandinan invites the community to observe this important day by participating in activities and discussions that promote a culture of respect and dignity for older persons. By acknowledging their contributions and addressing the challenges they face, Curaçao can create a future where every senior is treated with the respect they deserve. Together, we can make "ageing with dignity" not just a theme, but a cherished reality for all.
