‘Nuto’ Wawoe case to be heard Pro Forma on July 31

WILLEMSTAD - Urvin ‘NutoWawoe will appear before the judge for the first time next Wednesday, July 31. It will be a so-called pre-trial hearing, where the defense can submit investigative requests, among other things. Nuto is legally represented by attorney Alicia Blonk.

The 39-year-old Wawoe is considered one of the leaders of the criminal Curaçaoan gang ‘No Limit Soldiers’ (NLS) and is suspected of involvement in murder, large-scale drug trafficking, and money laundering in both Curaçao and Sint Maarten.

Nuto’s arrest was part of the Themis investigation, a comprehensive probe into criminal organizations in Curaçao and Sint Maarten. In November 2020, Shurandy ‘Tyson’ Quant, a childhood friend of Wawoe from the Koraal Specht neighborhood, was arrested in Dubai in the first phase of this investigation. Quant was another key figure in the NLS.

Nuto is awaiting the handling of his case in a Dutch prison. It is not yet known if he will be brought to Curaçao for this pre-trial hearing, which is not common practice. Typically, he would only be brought over for the first substantive hearing. Nuto can be ‘present’ via video link.

The substantive hearing of the case is expected to take place in early 2025.
