WILLEMSTAD - No permits will be issued for new minimarkets (tokos) and supermarkets for the time being. The government has imposed a moratorium, effective October 1.
The reason is the proliferation of such shops in some neighborhoods on Curaçao. For that reason, the government will link the location policy to a digital geographic map system, GIS.
A moratorium on license issuance was previously instituted in 2014 and has since been extended numerous times. A new feature is the link with the GIS system in order to shape a location policy in this way.
In this way, the population density surrounding a possible new application and the distance people have to travel to get to the store can be taken into account when making applications.
