No Major Impact Expected on Police and Justice System from New Terrorism Law

| By Correspondent March 17, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The proposed tightening of terrorism-related legislation in Curaçao is not expected to significantly increase the workload for police, prosecutors, or the judiciary.

According to the government, most of the conduct targeted by the new law is already criminalized under existing legislation. The amendments primarily serve to refine and strengthen legal definitions and penalties.

As a result, authorities anticipate that the changes will actually make enforcement more efficient rather than more burdensome. No additional manpower or major financial resources are expected to be required.

The prison system is also not expected to face increased pressure. Officials from the detention system have indicated that the changes will not lead to a significant rise in inmate numbers.

The government presented these assurances in response to concerns from Parliament regarding implementation capacity and potential strain on the justice system.
