New water plant to begin operations by late 2026

Local | By Press release November 27, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Aqualectra and Seven Seas Group (Seven Seas) have signed an agreement to construct a new water plant located west of Hato International Airport. The plant, referred to as RO-5 Hato West, is projected to begin operations by the end of 2026, ensuring the continued production and distribution of pure, high-quality drinking water for Curaçao.

On Tuesday, November 26, Aqualectra and Seven Seas celebrated this milestone with government officials, dignitaries, and special guests, marking a significant step toward a sustainable future for the island.

In August 2024, the two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to negotiate the details of the project. Seven Seas was selected through a public tender in February 2024, leveraging its extensive experience in constructing and operating desalination plants across the Caribbean and around the globe.

Agreement Highlights

The recently signed agreement outlines a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model for the new RO-5 Hato West plant. The facility will produce 25,000 cubic meters of water daily using reverse osmosis technology, a proven method already used in Curaçao to convert seawater into safe, high-quality drinking water.

The construction of the new plant will allow the current water production site at Mundu Nobo to be repurposed for future tourism and commercial investments. Aqualectra has already begun preparatory dismantling work at the Mundu Nobo site.

Ensuring Reliability and Sustainability

The establishment of the Hato West plant will enhance Aqualectra’s capacity to ensure reliable and sustainable water production and supply for the island. With this project, the company aims to meet the growing demand for water while advancing Curaçao's long-term development and sustainability goals.
