WILLEMSTAD - Several neighborhoods will soon have new roundabouts and new traffic signs are on the way. This was announced by the Minister of Transport, Security and Spatial Planning (VVRP), Charles Cooper, on Thursday morning during parliamentary question time.
The minister announced that the roundabouts in Brievengat and Zegu will be transformed into roundabouts. The ministry also wants to invest more money in crash barriers such as the roller barriers for the Juliana Bridge on the Otrobanda side, because the ministry believes that this will reduce the number of serious accidents. Despite the fact that these rails are very expensive, it is being examined whether they can be placed in high-risk areas such as on the Schottegatweg near the supermarket Mangusa Rio Canario and Emmastad at Post 5.
Cooper also mentioned the holes in the roads during question time. “Filling the holes is only a temporary solution, because busy arterial roads cannot simply be closed off so that the entire road can be renovated.” However, motorists do incur damage to their tires, which is why Member of Parliament Giselle Mc William made a suggestion to temporarily make an exception for the import duties on car tires, so that the purchase of a new tire remains affordable.
In addition, the Ministry of VVRP wants to use campaigns to improve the behavior of citizens in traffic. This includes, for example, not driving under the influence of alcohol or wearing a seatbelt.
It is not yet known when all traffic adjustments will take effect and the new traffic signs will arrive.
