WILLEMSTAD - The new national emblem of Curaçao will be announced on Monday 10 October. Minister of Education, Culture and Sport Sithree van Heydoorn announced this during a press conference on Friday.
Expectations about the announcement of the new weapon were high, but during the press conference, it quickly became clear that the winning design will only be presented on Monday.
During the press conference, Van Heydoorn described the process of developing a new emblem. The current coat of arms shows a ship of the West India Company, but now that the political relations have changed since 10-10-10, according to the minister it is time for a new emblem.
Chairman of the National Emblem Committee, Jaret Guanipa, explains that it is necessary to change the emblem because Curaçao is now a country within a kingdom. It has its own national anthem and that includes a suitable emblem. “It's about how the world sees us,” Guanipa said.
The process to announce the winner is completely anonymous. 205 designs were submitted, after which a top ten was chosen. Five points were taken into account in the top ten. The design should be simple, contain colors, have characteristic local elements, be original and unique. In addition, a patriotic interpretation must be given.
The winner will be announced on Monday, October 10 at 6 p.m. on Brionplein. Everyone is welcome.
