New legislation for dog registration and sterilization in Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent October 25, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Starting January 1, dog owners in Curaçao will be required to register and sterilize their pets. The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature will implement these new measures as part of the Animal Welfare Project to improve the well-being of both pets and the community. The measures will be legally enforced.

As of the effective date, all dogs in Curaçao must be registered with an ISO microchip. This measure is intended not only to help quickly trace lost pets but also to enhance public health and safety. The mandatory sterilization aims to reduce the stray dog population.

In collaboration with organizations such as Rescue Paws Curaçao and Stichting Dierenhulp Curaçao, the ministry is offering free sterilizations. Residents are encouraged to register and sterilize their pets in a timely manner to help curb the overpopulation of dogs. In addition to reducing unwanted animals, sterilization offers health benefits for dogs, such as lowering the risk of certain diseases.

To ensure pet owners are well-informed, information sessions will be organized. These sessions will explain the new law and provide practical tips on pet care. Additionally, the participating organizations will actively visit various neighborhoods, giving residents the opportunity to register and sterilize their pets on-site.
