WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Justice Shalten Hato has introduced a new law aimed at strengthening the rights of victims of sexual offenses. Hato announced this in a Facebook post on Monday afternoon.
The law arises from the need to better address sexual misconduct, such as sexual violence and child abuse. The increase in child pornography and outdated legislation have made a modern approach necessary.
“The new legislation provides compensation for the often devastating suffering experienced by victims and establishes stricter measures to tackle perpetrators,” Hato wrote. The focus is on compelling offenders to change their behavior through penalties and behavioral interventions, which should also help prevent the recurrence of crimes.
Hato emphasizes that the law is not only about punishing offenders but also about ensuring justice for victims. “This law provides a robust legal framework that protects victims and addresses sexual offenses more effectively,” said Hato.
