WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) intends to implement new policies for inspections at catering establishments. This decision follows an incident involving a cabinet employee. After an inspection by the authorities, Restaurant Greenhouse in Santa Maria had to close because it did not comply with hygiene regulations. According to Minister Javier Silvania, a minister subsequently ordered the immediate reopening of the restaurant, but the specific minister is not disclosed.
The incident came to light through the media while Silvania was abroad. Upon his return to Curaçao, he initiated an immediate investigation, the results of which are already known and have been discussed with Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas. The cabinet employee who allegedly violated the rules has received an official warning.
Silvania expresses regret over the situation and takes prompt action by formulating new policies. He hopes that the Technical Hygienic Care (THZ), responsible for conducting inspections at catering establishments, can continue its work effectively.
"THZ carries out inspections in the context of disease prevention and reducing health-threatening situations," says Silvania. He commends THZ, acknowledging the challenges they face when having to close catering establishments.
Additionally, a protocol is being developed to regulate the collaboration between ministries for hygiene inspections, ensuring clarity regarding authorities and responsibilities for everyone involved. Silvania anticipates that this will make inspections more targeted and efficient.
